We aspire seeing our students take bold steps—and Tamara Leslie is a perfect example. In a feature with The Mirror, Tamara shared her inspiring journey from the UK to the Caribbean to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor at New Anglia University.
After just one week at a UK university, Tamara made a life-changing decision: she left Sussex and flew to Anguilla to study medicine at New Anglia University — saving herself over £88,000 in tuition fees.
“I thought that surely there must be another way to get this done a bit quicker,” Tamara said. “Ultimately the money and the time and everything — coming to New Anglia just won me over.”
Originally from Papua New Guinea and raised in Eastbourne, Tamara faced high international fees in the UK. Instead, she opted for New Anglia’s accelerated pre-med and medical programme. With smaller class sizes and direct access to teachers, she feels more connected and confident in her studies.
“The class size is definitely a big influence… in Brighton it felt like 100 to 150 of us. I couldn’t really raise my hand,” she said.
Tamara now studies full-time, works at a beach bar, and enjoys her Caribbean lifestyle. “It reminded me of my home country,” she said. “It’s just so cheery and happy… I didn’t get a chance to be homesick.”
She plans to complete her clinical rotations in the UK through New Anglia’s NHS partnership. Her advice?
“Go for it. It’s the best way to grow as an individual.”
At New Anglia University, we are incredibly proud to have students like Tamara—brave, ambitious, and determined to carve their own path in medicine.
